In your opinion is Safeway a better job or working at JCPenney’s?

I have a job interview for Safeway today to be a Deli Clerk. I currently work at JCPenney’s in the Lingerie department making about 8.25 an hour and getting anywhere from 15-35 hours a week. Penny’s is not union, Safeway is. Penny’s doesn’t have great benefits and I don’t know how good Safeway’s benefits are. If you’ve worked at Safeway can you explain the whole union thing to me? I dunno how it works. That is one of the make or break things for me right now.

First off, I’ve never worked at either place, but I think Safeway would be better. You may have to pay union dues (not a lot), but you will also have a group of people looking out for your best interest. The benefits will probably be better and I think it would suck to work in JC Penney’s. It’s never going to get too busy at Safeway, but you’ll at least get to interact with more people and don’t have to worry about selling anyone anything. There’s no commission at Safeway (I don’t think) and you don’t have to approach people. You just do your job, have people say thank you, and then get paid for it. Plus, you may get a discount on groceries, which you could probably use more than clothoes from J.C. Penney’s.
