Is a prepaid phone like a gift card?

I was just thinking about all my little nieces and nephews for Christmas the other day, and I really wanted to try to get them something that they would love. It is hard to buy for them right now because they are all in their pre-teen and early teen years. The best thing that I could think the get for them is a prepaid phone, and give them Prepaid Cell Phone Refill with it. None of them have ever had a cell phone, and I think this is a great way to let them have one without having the problems of a contract.
