Why does the little girl step on a birthday cake in JCPenney’s American Living commercial?

You can see it for about a second in the middle of the commercial.
There is a whole family surrounding the table on a birthday party and then there’s a girl who purposely steps on cake with one foot while everyone starts cheering for her.

Is it a tradition of some sort that I never heard of?

No - it’s just supposed to be “funny”….but I don’t think it is.

I imagine b/c the writers/makers of the commercial thought it was funny and people would buy more products from JCpenny that way.

It’s her way of blowing out her candles. It’s also in a gloss ad in O Magazine this month.

The new American Living brand at JC Penny is supposed to promote living your life the way you want to live it

I’m glad you asked that, I’ve been wondering myself when I see it. If they think it’s funny, I don’t think it is……interesting question, a star for you!

I saw that commercial last evening and wondered about it as well.
Strange segment to the commercial, that. Doesn’t convince me to shop JC Pennney’s in the least. In fact, it has the opposite effect.

I’ve noticed that the latest JC Penney commercials are horrible and don’t even really advertise the products. They should use a different advertising agency that’s more traditional and not so “creative” that they lose the whole message.

I have no idea! Why is she even on the table??
I had to go online and watch it a few times to and the only thing I can figure is maybe they’re playing on the “birthday mishaps” theme?

TO A KID: What’s more fun that smashing a birthday cake? Yes, it is a rarely heard of tradition that only a few lucky kids have ever had the opportunity to do. Parents take great care to make sure the new goulashes are dishwasher clean (and don’t touch the floor beforehand), the B/D kid gets to smash the cake with one step, and the young guests get to enjoy the remains, most often with their bare hands. Great fun for kids in this age group, but older folks just don’t get it.

To inspire this inane, insipid discussion.

I liked ‘kayakdw’s’ answer….I am happy to realize that
the boot stomp on the cake finally makes some sense.

The cake isn’t being ‘wasted’; it is just a unique child-like
way of cutting the birthday cake with the clean boot
instead of the traditional knife! :)

Saw it a looong time ago. It turned into a mini food fight with pieces of the cake.”
